Wargaming to Build a Shared Vision of the Battle

“If commanders and staffs are to integrate or synchronize the detailed decisions and activities of the complex battlefield then they must have the same image of the battle. This image must be constructed during wargaming”, said Major John E. Frame in the Spring 1996 issue of the Army’s Field Artillery Journal, as he succinctly described the critical link between wargaming and visualization.

Modern simulation systems (such as MAK ONE) can model the conditions developed in the Course of Action Development phase of the Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) to bring Synthetic Environments and 3D graphics to bear as an aid in the development of a common operational picture.

In the video below, watch the battle unfold as analysts examine a defensive reaction to a theoretical missile strike.

It begins with the launch of ballistic missiles, which are detected by Destroyers. Detection of the launch is passed along to submarines stationed in the sea, as well as to anti-missile batteries stationed at strategic locations. The submarines are the first to act, responding with an array of cruise missiles that quickly destroy and incapacitate the ballistic launch sites. The anti-missile batteries sense the incoming missiles as they enter their threat domes and launch interception missiles as soon as they are in effective range, eliminating the threat.

By integrating proprietary data into VR-Forces' missile hit tables and using VR-Forces' API, analysts can accurately model missile behavior, both in terms of flight trajectory and interception probabilities. As new research is conducted and new air defense system prototypes are developed, these tables can be easily modified to reflect their changing capabilities. VR-Forces also offers a variety of modes to help visualize the size and position of the threat and effective ranges of the anti-missile systems, making it easier to understand defense strategies.
